Good preaching in a good church
As I am preparing a Sunday School lesson for the adult teacher’s for later this month, I find a quote I wrote over a dozen years ago. I still like it!
“If you find a preacher that de-emphasizes or mocks in-depth study of the Bible and the line by line teaching of God’s Word, run from him. If you can attend a church time after time and not need to refer to your Bible, leave that church. If all the sermons preached are a verse here and a verse there with little or no systematic, contextual exposition of God’s truth, avoid that ministry! Good preaching is not a collecting of candied stories and catchy idioms. Good preaching is teaching with passion. There is sweat in true study and there should also be perspiration in the pews. You should have to think from time to time in church. If your purpose in attending church is entertainment, your Christianity is chaff.”
Amen.
